The artist depicted autumn in the forest, almost through a tangle of branches – there are no rivers, no clouds, no rain in the picture (the usual signs of autumn) – only the blackening trunks of trees are barely discernible among the golden leaf fall. The sun, obviously, rose not so long ago, in the picture, judging by the shadows and the animation of two magpies on a forest path, it is already close to noon, but still the first half of the day. A very rare landscape in gold tones in its sophistication. Among the leaves, you can see a few red ones, and the black-and-white "tailcoats" of the magpies are visible, but the golden, sun-soaked glow of the foliage prevails over the whole gamut. In some places there are islands of green grass still in summer, between the branches and falling leaves you can see a faint blue sky – but this is not what fascinates Ostroukhov's canvas, but how he managed to convey the "dance", the whirling flight of falling leaves.
